2020 was a challenging and eye-opening year in myriad ways to say the least — COVID, the Black Lives Matter protests and the election.
For me personally, I found approaching each one of these topics from the perspective of personal style a balancing act. I wanted to be of service to you — to help you in any small way that I could to make your life just a little bit easier. At the same time, what I had to offer felt so woefully inadequate with respect to each of these deep and complicated topics.
I dove into action — creating the Virtual Coffee series to support you, showing up as an ally at Black Lives Matter demonstrations, reading books like White Fragility, and turning to postcard writing and phone-banking to do everything I could to engender positive change.
When your own survival is on the line, wondering what to wear is obviously not top of your list. I completely get that — and I support it. And yet, I loved my 2020 clients who saw their personal style work as self-care and I loved supporting them in that way.
Thanks, also, to all of you who submitted your answers to my Reader Survey. It felt amazing to be able to answer your questions and concerns in blog posts. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to help you.
The most important thing to me is that you do everything you can to stay safe and healthy.
We are deep into the spiraling pandemic. Yet, hope is on the horizon. With the vaccine being deployed and more coming, it is only a matter of time before we can all emerge and begin to interact with each other once again. For those of you on the front lines, we continue to be deeply in debt to your service. Hang in there.
As Sonya Renee Taylor said, “We will not go back to normal. Normal never was. Our pre-corona existence was not normal other than we normalized greed, inequity, exhaustion, depletion, extraction, disconnection, confusion, rage, hoarding, hate and lack. We should not long to return, my friends. We are being given the opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature.”
With that in mind, I’m going to post less and send fewer newsletters. Instead of planning a Spring and Fall Master Class, I’ll be gathering names on a Wait List and will run the class when I have a quorum. If you want to work with me 1:1, just drop me a line and we’ll make it happen.
Let’s give ourselves some grace, rest up and recover as much as possible over the holiday, stay safe, then begin to imagine how that new garment might look in 2021.
