Have you been riding a roller-coaster of emotions the past few months?
Even I have had days when I don’t want to get dressed. Don’t get me wrong — I love a good PJ day — but this has been relentless.
In the same breath, I have to acknowledge my privilege: I haven’t been ill with COVID or lost anyone close to COVID yet and I am so grateful to have been spared that tragedy thus far.
So how can I talk about opportunity at this moment?
For the first time for so many of you, you are finally getting to wear exactly what you want.
Feeling Into It
What have you been wearing over the past six months? Have you gone back to your teen-aged uniform of jeans, tees and sweatshirts? Have you been wearing leggings? Have you been getting dressed at all?
In the Spring, I focused on how getting dressed can be motivating and how to get out of a style rut. Now that we’re six months into the pandemic with another year in our sights, the question becomes how we lean into the reality and create something positive.
The opportunity now is the time to experiment with what feels good for you — and looks good — so that you can return to whatever passes for “regular” life on the other side of this pandemic with a clear sense of your own personal style.
Some questions to ask:
- What feels good to me right now?
- What helps me do my best work?
- Are those two things the same or different?
- How can I make them one?
Last week, I offered ways to break up your suits and pull some items out of your closet that you may have overlooked. As we transition into Fall, you can observe what you’re excited to wear and what falls flat for you.
This is the beginning. You can start to feel your way into your own personal style. It will be a matter of trial and error like it’s always been. The difference is that there’s no pressure since you are at home and there is very little risk. That difference is everything.
