How the Professionals Glamoured Me

If you've ever caught an episode of "True Blood" on HBO, you know what I mean by "glamoured" -- it's the process by which the vampires make the humans forget what they've just seen.  I recently experienced my own form of "glamoring" on the day I had my head shot taken.

Most women get their hair professionally cut and styled, but few ever get the experience of having both -- and having it feel wonderful.  It seems that even at the hair salon, many of us can't wait to get home and style it the way we normally would so we go back to looking like ourselves.

Professional Make-Up.  You might have gotten your make-up done for your wedding, but it probably felt strange.  Make-up for photographs is always too much for real life.  It may have shocked you and your spouse-to-be to see you wearing so much!  And, perhaps, you felt out of sorts because of it -- which is not exactly how you want to feel on your wedding day.

Professional Models.  Given all of this, it's funny to think how many of us compare ourselves to professional models who get this sort of treatment every day.  We look at photographs of the models with different hair and make-up and wonder why we don't look like that, and, perhaps why we don't experiment a little more.  The feeling of what is familiar versus what is glamorous in the fashion world often collide in these expectations.

Glamouring.  Which is why I've taken to calling it "glamouring" -- because when you look at a professional photograph you forget that the person in the photograph definitely does not look that way in real life.  Or, if they do, you would think they have way too much make-up on!

Defining the Look.  On the day of my shoot, I knew exactly what look I wanted and I trusted my stylist and make-up artist to get me there.  Having worked with Krisztina, the photographer, before, I knew she would hit the light just right to make me look luminous.  What I didn't expect was the result -- in my head shot, I look like Christie Brinkley!

Honestly, I am in love with myself in this photograph!

Everyday Beauty.  This result brought home to me yet again how unrealistic our expectations for ourselves are.  I do not have a team of hair and makeup people getting me ready for every day.  I do okay by myself.  But, as the people who see me every day can tell you, I definitely don't look like I do in my head shot!  But, now, I kind of like to think of myself as looking that amazing and it motivates me.

Allow Your Befores and Your Afters.  Unless you want to spend two hours every day in hair & make-up, you need to forgive yourself for not looking fully glam on a daily basis.  Do what you can to make yourself feel good -- blow-dry your hair, put on some make-up and take the time for regular maintenance.  But don't beat yourself up for not looking perfect all the time -- just remember that models been glamoured!

Feel Beautiful and Confident Every Day.
