What's Your Color Story?

The Land of Color
In my Style Suites Sessions Master Class, we're deep in the middle of translating my personal style formula for each member of the class.  It's been fun to see how the information is unfolding for each person.

For one member of the class, the "what matters" part of the formula has been most exciting.  Choosing her color story has been an amazing journey of self-discovery.

Previously, she chose colors purely on the basis of what she liked.  She had no idea what looked good on her or which colors held the most meaning.  Now, she is completely energized, exploring color meanings and joyfully teasing out which colors fit her personality best.

For another, choosing the palette has allowed her to fall in love with her wardrobe again.  Previously, she had felt divorced from it, even though she's an extremely visual person.  Now, she's really taking control -- and she's so much happier!

Color is truly powerful -- and such an amazing tool to make our personal style propel our purpose forward.  Plus, it's super fun!

So What Is A Color Story?
The color story one of the most important aspects of my approach and completely sets it apart.

In advertising and interior design, color meaning is employed all the time.  The Pantone Color Dictionary starts with this audacious statement:
"Of all the forms of non-verbal communication, color is the most instantaneous method of conveying messages and meanings."
The. most. instantaneous!  That is some powerful stuff.

Interestingly, though, no one seems to use this in fashion or styling.  I'm not sure why that is the case.  But, since I've always enjoyed breaking the rules, I thought, "Why not?"

Thus, I introduced a twist on the classic color story:  a color story with meaning!

A color story is the 3-5 colors you choose to build your outfit or your wardrobe.  Fashion stylists use it for spreads in magazines and designers use it to create their collections.  It makes sense -- when you choose a few colors (2 neutrals at least and 3 values at most), then all of your pieces and accessories work with one another.

DailyOutfit's color story is tied to purpose and meaning -- the "what matters" part of my formula for personal style.  The color story you choose for your outfit or wardrobe is comprised of colors that tie in with your core values.  That way, we use the power of color to communicate our core values.

Simple.  Effective.

If you want to align your style with your personality, color is a great place to start.

Try it!  Choose 3-5 colors that align with your core values.  Take a good look at your wardrobe and see -- how many of your pieces are already in those colors?  Of those pieces, which ones do you love to wear?  Is there a correlation?

I'd love to hear from you.  Let me know what you discover!
